The first of the side stays attached. The small area of contact at the top of the stay is very apparent, especially compared to the area at the bottom.
The gussets added. This shows a more convincing attachment for the stay. A detail of a gusset, note the relief for the moulded gusset on the truss.
FINAL DETAILS
Once the stays and gussets are in place, the bridge is virtually complete. However, I thought that some final details were needed; these are representations of the rivets fixing the stays and adding some plate work on the corners of the added flange on the truss.
As the parts that form the stay assembly are quite thick, notably the girder and angle, it is not possible to emboss the rivets, even if it were possible to access the parts once assembled.
I made stick-on rivets by embossing some 0.040in plasticard, then shaving off the dimple produced to stick on the parts. A new scalpel blade is essential for successful shaving. The dimple is picked up on the point of the blade and transferred to its location. Adhesive is added to the surface before positioning the dimple. It can be pushed around initially to achieve its correct position.
An alternative to shaving embossed rivets is to chop some from 1mm square or round plastic section. Again they are picked up on the tip of the blade and located on the surface. The difficulty with chopping them is to get consistent short lengths.
The final details are the corner capping angles, which are made from 0.030in plasticard. They were sized to be twice as long as the width of the capping strips. The midpoint was marked, then the part was held in parallel-jawed pliers with midpoint on the end of the jaws. A bend was made pushing the part through nearly 90 degrees. The part was then stuck over the corner and completed with more stick-on rivet heads.
This completes the construction of the bridge structure. It now remains to make the abutments and the mid-stream pier.
